A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Venus Rising, A Celebration of Women (150-500 words).: I personally celebrate women through my artwork, with every brushstroke and pencil sketch. Women, the female form, our Venus, embodies the meaning of ‘metanoia’. We are ever-changing, transforming and both literally and figuratively birthing new life and change. Upon completing the piece, I found that it reminded me of a poem by Nikita Gill, 93 Percent Stardust. Though that poem speaks on behalf of humans in general, I do believe that, though biased being that my work is mainly of African American women, women are collectively the universe's greatest creation as we are creators, true artists who carry the stars in our veins. My hope is that while viewing this piece, women see the beauty within themselves; the power and expansion of who we are as beings that walk this Earth. Metanoia displays a woman modestly covering herself and essentially hiding her face but in doing that, she brings the attention to the universe that she carries within herself.

A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Venus Rising, A Celebration of Women (150-500 words).: “Becoming” Is an original song composed by Becky Sinn. It is a somber celebration of the resilience and determination of women. A woman will do what she feels she has to do. Whether it is finding a home within herself, dancing through tragedy, or leaving this plane all together. She will do what she believes she needs to do, without fear. It is for a lost mother her friends and her daughter left behind.

City: Port Orange
State: FL
Country: United States

Dimensions: 14 x 11
A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Venus Rising, A Celebration of Women (150-500 words).: Mariposa is a playful piece that breaks the composition of a representational portrait with imaginative elements. The contrast between the grey-scale portrait and the interjections of color serve to increase the dissonance between the woman and the dreamlike butterflies that interact with her. The goal of Mariposa is to celebrate the beauty of a woman’s mind. The butterfly is a symbol associated with the soul, with hope and freedom. The butterflies represent Mariposa’s colorful inner world. She is confident and composed on the outside, while her imagination “flutters” internally. Of course, with the imagery of butterflies carries the implication that they were once caterpillars. “The eyes are the windows to the soul”. Mariposa’s eyes are in color to represent her ability to see her imagination manifested. This ties into the butterfly symbolism in that they both imply metamorphosis, the potential for change. Mariposa is a force of nature, capable of creating color in her black-and-white world.

Dimensions: 20 x 30
A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Venus Rising, A Celebration of Women (150-500 words).: Venus has often been observed to have a subtle glow on its right side, this is why records exist of it being described to have a crescent shape. My submission is inspired by this ashen light, my lighting is similar to that off a dawn slowly rising over the subject allowing the viewer to only see the outer rim of the shape. The color is inspired by the deepest valleys of Venus where when temps reach 750 degrees or above, the ground glows a copper red. Venus was regarded as a deity of ancient Italy and in several Latin cities temples in Venus’s honor were built, inspiring the name of this piece “Religion”.

A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Venus Rising, A Celebration of Women (150-500 words).: I have seen Venus once before. I have stood at the river’s edge and bathed in her light. But, unbeknownst to me, her presence was fleeting. Many years passed, and with each one, she became more of a forgotten memory. I had stopped looking for her. My telescope slowly shifted across the night sky to Mercury, a familiar sight. While immersed in Mercury’s glow, quite suddenly, a ray of light beamed on the bay. Venus, in all her glory, entered my field of vision. She glows brighter than I remember. She holds me close as I stare in awe of her light. Fully captivated, I promise myself to never take her for granted again.

Dimensions: 24 x 18
A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Venus Rising, A Celebration of Women (150-500 words).: I have constantly failed to deem different parts of my body beautiful, however after discovering various methods of self-love and self appreciation, I could not stop loving myself and noticing the different features of my body that emphasize who I am. In regard to "Venus Rising" I find the celebration of women and the strength they demonstrate everyday beautiful. Their bodies, that come in different shapes, sizes, and colors demonstrate tenacity and ever-growing beauty. Our bodies tell stories about who we are and where we come from. Our bodies deserve to be admired, to be displayed, and to be remembered. I think this exhibition will demonstrate what it means to be a woman and reveal the heartwarming and delicate parts of ourselves that we do not often share with the world. This is our deeper selves. The parts most closest to us.

Dimensions: 12 x 3.75
A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Venus Rising, A Celebration of Women (150-500 words).: Unknown Activist: A woman, embattled against predatory forces, determined to have her voice heard through the deliberate maelstrom of malicious corporate noise. The collage is of a famous agricultural activist from the 197's who spoke out against mono-cropping and genetically modified food. The sky she is set against reveals a sense of impending doom, the course that is set by industry funding, cherry picked facts to support proof over humanity. A raging maelstrom of misinformation blown by the ill winds of would be corporate god-hood. Her name has been lost, her voice buried by an overwhelming flood of titalating sound bites designed to bury while pretending to fertilize. A s a female organic farm worker, I celebrate her vitality and message. Lost but determined, exploited, undermined, and angry- We will shout with all our rage, our knowledge, and our power, until our song is heard.

A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Venus Rising, A Celebration of Women (150-500 words).: In this painting, “She Sells Seashells” , the subject is my internal Venus, a spirit that is mystical and ethereal. Representing all women, Venus the goddess of love and beauty enjoys what surrounds her, and in this case it is the abundance of nature. Being born in the month of March, under the water sign of Pisces, she sits lovingly amongst the aqua water, and beautiful seashells with the warmth of the sun on her face. She allows the sea breezes to gently blow through her long hair, unaware of anything but the love and gratitude for this moment… it becomes a moment to celebrate being a women.

A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Venus Rising, A Celebration of Women (150-500 words).: This piece is about embracing the fire within. As a Phoenix she is not scared of who or what she is, nor does she feel fear of becoming all of who she can be. The Phoenix is an ancient figure and depicted in modern super hero films and in some of those she is afraid of herself. I wanted to portray her with no fear and fully accepting of her light and her own darkness.

Dimensions: 19 x 12 x 5
A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Venus Rising, A Celebration of Women (150-500 words).: Breathe statement. Breathe is inspired by the weight that woman bare throughout their life whether it is raising children, caring for family or earning a living and setting an example to others. The weight of life sometimes does not give us a minute to Breathe. However, we must find our own paths that allow us to inspire, create and be examples. Her strength grows from her home like the clay she is molded from, the fire of the kiln shows her fierce persistence in her nature and the faux oxidized paint allows her to Breathe.

Dimensions: 61 x 21
A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Venus Rising, A Celebration of Women (150-500 words).: Justice was inspired by the model’s real life. She was the strength of her family and she raised her children on her own after an unexpected divorce. She rose above the trials and tribulations and educated herself and now runs a successful business. Justice is the epitome of all the woman who escalate above unforeseen difficulties to succeed. The background transforms from stormy to calm and her robes show the tears that life has placed upon her. Her strength is symbolized by the sword. The scales are unbalanced to show that life is not always fair, but her perseverance will sustain her. Finally, the blindfold, to show that justice is blind and unbiased, however no matter what your disability a woman’s tenacity will flourish.

This verdant realm is a mirrored version of the real world, a vast and ever-shifting intangible dimension of spirits and nature magic, and a source of treasure that defies mortal perceptions of reality. Where the dream represents the cycle of life, in essence, being the highest expression of the relationship between endings and beginnings, between life and death, and what the world may some day be again.

A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Venus Rising, A Celebration of Women (150-500 words).: A poem depicting women as seasons. Completed on 1/7/21 “Venus Rising, a celebration of women” When I think about how many times I kept going when I wanted to give up, the times I pushed forward when I wanted to crawl into a hole and hide - it amazes me. The little girl hiding her tears at night. The adolescent putting on a brave face. The young adult feeling lost in the world. All of those girls would be proud of the woman I’ve become. Painting poetry out of pain and rising from ashes left from the fires that nearly burned me - this is one of my biggest accomplishments.
