Metanoia
Named 'Metanoia' based on the definition "journey of changing one's mind, heart, self, or way of life which is followed by a positive re-building". This was the outcome of the completion of this piece. I started the piece lost with no destination trying to break out of an artist block and this is what came out of it. An oil and acrylic paint collaboration on stretched canvas, Metanoia was the first piece of mine that came to mind when initially coming across the theme. This piece was completed on June 1st of 2020. The painting can be hung up on the wall. The background and space/galaxies of the body are done in acrylic paint and the body is done in oil.

A short statement of the proposed artwork's relationship to the theme of "Venus Rising, A Celebration of Women (150-500 words).
I personally celebrate women through my artwork, with every brushstroke and pencil sketch. Women, the female form, our Venus, embodies the meaning of ‘metanoia’. We are ever-changing, transforming and both literally and figuratively birthing new life and change. Upon completing the piece, I found that it reminded me of a poem by Nikita Gill, 93 Percent Stardust. Though that poem speaks on behalf of humans in general, I do believe that, though biased being that my work is mainly of African American women, women are collectively the universe's greatest creation as we are creators, true artists who carry the stars in our veins. My hope is that while viewing this piece, women see the beauty within themselves; the power and expansion of who we are as beings that walk this Earth. Metanoia displays a woman modestly covering herself and essentially hiding her face but in doing that, she brings the attention to the universe that she carries within herself.
