For the last 30 years, Maher has pursued her studio practice alongside Japanese martial methods and Chinese meditative and healing arts. In 2013, she retired from training “Amagakure no Sato Ryu” holding a rank of Okuden Kaiden (black belt). She is a teacher of Qigong, Taiji, Usui Reiki and Chinese Taoist practices; as well as a practitioner of Medical Qigong, Meridian Tapping and Reiki healing modalities and travels regularly to Asia and Europe to pursue her Taiji and Qigong as well as studies of European and Asian visual arts.
Maher moved from Detroit to Brooklyn shortly after receiving her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1990. Before that she lived in Providence while working on her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. And before that she lived in Kansas, Indiana, New York, Florida, North Carolina, back to Kansas, Virginia, Washington DC, Heidelberg, Munich, California and back to Washington DC. Nomad? Nomad.
Maher’s studio practice has traveled a varied path over 30 years that includes installations, artist books and work on paper addressing human warfare and violence as well as more contemplative explorations of consciousness and embodiment. Her current work centers on ink, gilding and drawing on paper as well as unique and editioned books.
